MOVIE REVIEW:Les diaboliques
Auhtor:

it is a good movie where the director tries to trick the audience, some
may not be fooled. he makes it interesting throughout most of the film
but the ending was disappointing to me. the acting was okay except for
the main girl, she was good. the very end, the director tried to add a
second twist, but i think that was just kind of dumb. it is a good

It says on the DVD that I bought that this is a classic, so I thought
it was about time I gave this a try. And boy, it certainly didn't
disappoint!

I usually only know this kind of nail biting suspense throughout the
entire movie from Hitchcock thrillers, but director Clouzot could not
have done a better job!

This is high tension suspense pure! The viewer – although aware, of
course, that killing is a bad thing – finds himself cheering the cruel
headmaster's wife and his mistress on as they go about killing him.
After all, it does seem like a "good cause". And just as one believes
to understand what is going on, the rules of the game change, and one
anxiously wonders what turn of events is waiting around the next corner
till the very end!

An absolute masterpiece, with a brilliant little twist at the end. One
cannot do better for a suspense thriller.

But be warned – nothing for weak hearts!

The story opens in a run-down French boys' school, where the cruel
headmaster has made life unbearable for his fragile wife and his
mistress (Simone Signoret), both of whom are teachers. The ladies
decide to join forces and kill him over a long holiday weekend and
their plan goes well…until his body goes missing.

This is a very intense and spooky murder mystery that kept me guessing
until the wonderfully satisfying end. The actors are all excellent and
there is a good contrast between the weakling wife and the domineering
mistress. The innocence of the school setting, a couple of humorous
male teachers, and a persistent detective add to the mix.

Filmed in black and white (mostly black shadows) and in French with
English subtitles, this is an excellent film noir that will keep you on
the edge of your seat.

More than 100 reviews, so I won't duplicate all the praise. For those
who panned the film, I feel so sorry for you . . . go watch the Sharon
Stone burlesque!

I just want to add one thing: I saw this film during its original
release at a theater in west LA (The Wilshire-Ebell) as a 15 year-old.
The theater manager must have been a real film buff, since he
"contributed" to one of the scariest scenes of the film. Near the end,
there is a scene at the climax of a long, suspenseful investigation by
the wife of the schoolmaster – she has heard mysterious noises in the
deserted rooms, through long, dim, creaky corridors in the school
building. At this point in the film, the lights in the schoolroom go
out. Just at that point, the manager had the projectionist turn off all
the house lights (dim as they were), as well! The effect instantly
immersed everyone right into the scene! I remember many people yelling
. . . I believe I was too frightened to make a sound.
